I'm thinking about changing my host.
Which host/provider can you recommend?
Perhaps a decent and cheap one!

My experience is, that most hosters - equal if they give you shared servers or shared virtual machines - who have special bundles for wordpress, can give you the best service. I had my blog at a hoster, who claimed himself for good service and he took 5 EUR per month. He updated to a version of PHP which was absolute incompatible with permalinks... I told him that wordpress doesnt work, but his opinion was, that I had to customize wordpress to his server. He had no idea how many people use this blogging software. So now I am at a hoster, who costs 1,50 EUR per month and everything is perfect. :-)

Sorry, I found this post late.

I can see that you're advice revolves around your bad experience. I'm sorry that you had one, but I must disagree with you on almost everything you said. Well, at least you need to qualify what you say.

1. It's a blog. I've not Amazon.com, it's not Yahoo.com. Yeah, outtages are bad, but no one is going to call the news they can't get to probloggerworld.de. There are a lot of productions systems (not just blogs) that run on shared servers and everything is fine.

2. You post leads people to believe that ONE shared host has only one SERVER. As one of your commentors stated, it all depends on how many people they host decides to put on a server.

3. That mod_rewrite thing is totally wrong. Afte reading this, I ran a quick search and I could NOT find one host that doesn't allow mod_rewrite.

4. IMO, no blogger needs the "freedom" of a dedicated server. I'm quite geeky and I've always found a way to do the things I need to do on a shared hosts. A lot of them offer (what I consider to be) advanced features such as SSH access, CRON Jobs, etc.

5. 200 hits a day crapped out your site? That's sad, but that's just YOUR host dude. Sorry.

@Yuri
mod_rewrite is one thing, one very very importent thing to be honest.
Do you mean shared hosting or a virtual server on a shared server?

The thing is that 95%+ of servers Do have mod_rewrite. Those that don't are Windows IIS, old Apache servers and those hosters that don't enable mod_rewrite for various reasons (these are in the minority).

Right now, nearly every self-respecting hosting supports Apache.

Also, I've run 15k visitors/day on a shared account. It pretty much handled it.

Don't blame your experience on others. Learn on your own mistakes :P

I can't say I agree. I've been on shared hosting through Dreamhost for a good amount of time, and because they are a quality company, they manage the servers effectively. They don't put a dozen, or a hundred, highly trafficked sites on one server and put a dozen or a hundred sites that nobody ever visits on another. My uptime, which is affected by all the sites hosted on my shared machine has been 99.92699% over 1.25 years (I calculated it recently for a page on my blog).

Shared hosting, when done right, can be financially beneficial for the small to medium sized website or blog. Certainly I wouldn't expect cnn.com or yahoo to be on shared hosting ;) - once you get huge, you'll need (and you'll probably be able to afford) a dedicated server.

[...] Leaving the Amateur League of Blogging: the Hosting Lesson by Rene Do not use shared hosting if you are at least a little bit serious about your blog project. This is a mistake I did and I don´t want you to experience it, too. I repeat: never ever make use of shared hosting. [...]
